#7 Coffee pod makers go big on compostable bioplastic

In the United Kingdom, compostable bioplastics maker Biome Technologies says it has received its largest order ever. Valued at just over half a million, the company’s heat-stable materials will be used in coffee pod applications for an “existing major client” in the United States. The materials are due to be delivered within 8 weeks.

“We believe that there is significant commercial potential for this coffee pod material, as brands in the hot beverage sector move to bio-based and compostable solutions to transform the sustainability of their products,” Paul Mines, CEO of Biome Technologies, tells Plastics in Packaging.

Biome’s bioplastics take less than three months to break down in industrial composters but do not become deformed when exposed to hot water in coffee machines.
