Fleetzero, Glosten make woke wakes

August 20, 2025 |

In Texas, Fleetzero has tapped Seattle’s Glosten to design what could be the longest-range hybrid-electric ship yet, a project that aims to move battery propulsion from short-hop ferries and harbor work into true bluewater service.

The design is already in motion, with engineering expected to advance this year and construction beginning in 2026. Once built, the vessel is meant to show how hybrid systems can stretch endurance and reduce fuel reliance on long routes, not just coastal trades.

The partners bring different strengths to the table: Fleetzero, a Houston-based builder focused on modular propulsion platforms, and Glosten, a Seattle naval architect with a record in tugs, ferries, and special-purpose vessels. Their collaboration builds on an earlier effort to retrofit a lightering support vessel for global tanker operator AET with plug-in hybrid propulsion.
