Gasum powers Equinor’s vessel with bio-LNG

August 12, 2024 |

In Finland Gasum reported it has partnered with Equinor to fuel the platform supply vessel Island Crusader with bio-LNG in the Port of Dusavik, Stavanger. The first bio-LNG delivery occurred in mid-July 2024, with Gasum set to continue bi-weekly deliveries, each comprising 2–3 truckloads of ISCC-EU certified mass balanced bio-LNG, totaling around 22 tons per truck.

This collaboration is part of Equinor’s broader goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Bio-LNG, which reduces life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 90% compared to fossil fuels, plays a critical role in this mission. It can be used in existing LNG applications across transport and industry sectors.

The Island Crusader, equipped with battery hybrid technology, benefits from this sustainable fuel, further enhancing its environmental performance. Gasum is committed to expanding renewable gas supplies, targeting 7 TWh annually by 2027, which would reduce customer carbon emissions by 1.8 million tons per year.

This partnership between Gasum and Equinor underscores the potential of bio-LNG in driving the maritime industry towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
