Göteborg Energi’s new biofuel-fired steam boiler one step closer to climate goals

October 10, 2023 |

In Sweden, in 2020, Göteborg Energi sharpened its climate ambitions and decided that all district heating must be based on renewable and recycled sources by the end of 2025 at the latest. A new biofuel-fired steam boiler at the Rya area is the most important measure to achieve the goal. Now the facility is becoming a reality. It is clear since the company’s board made the final investment decision and procurement of the project’s central contracts has been carried out.

The new biofuel-fired steam boiler will be integrated with Göteborg Energi’s existing facility Rya power plant. The boiler is estimated to contribute 156 megawatts of heat and 39 megawatts of electricity to the local energy system. The plant is flexible and can run on several different types of biofuels. Mainly forest chips (GROT) and recycled return wood (RT chips) from the region will be used.
