Hanwha successfully tests medium-to-large scale gas turbine

June 29, 2023 |

In Korea, Business Korea reported that Hanwha has successfully conducted a demonstration test of what it claims to be the world’s first medium-to-large scale gas turbine capable of generating more than 50% of its power from hydrogen, developed in partnership with Korea Western Power.

Hanwha Impact demonstrated a 59.5% hydrogen mixture in a medium-to-large (80MW) gas turbine at the Daejeon plant earlier this month, according to the report. The CO2 emission reduction rate during power generation with a 59.5% hydrogen mixture was recorded at 22%, compared to 100% liquefied natural gas (LNG) firing.

The technology of hydrogen mixing is currently being actively researched in advanced countries such as the US, Europe, and Japan. However, Hanwha is the first to have successfully demonstrated hydrogen mixed firing that is nearly commercially viable, overcoming significant technical barriers, the report adds.

Kim Hee-chul, CEO of Hanwha Impact, said: “We have proven that hydrogen-mixed firing using LNG gas turbines is truly feasible in Korea, bringing us one step closer to commercialization. Hanwha will not stop here and will continue to challenge for 100% hydrogen firing.”
