HD Hyundai Marine gets all clear from DNV on carbon capture retrofit

September 19, 2024 |

In the Netherlands, Offshore Energy reports HD Hyundai Marine Solution, along with several affiliated South Korean companies, has received Approval in Principle from classification society DNV for its onboard carbon capture and storage retrofit design.

The joint industry project tested the technology on a 15,000 TEU ultra-large containership running on liquefied natural gas. The system combines advanced carbon capture and liquefaction, allowing ships to capture CO2 emissions directly onboard.

DNV’s approval validates the feasibility of HD Hyundai’s OCCS design, which can be applied to a wide range of vessels, positioning the company at the forefront of maritime decarbonization. This approval also underscores the growing focus on retrofitting ships to reduce carbon emissions as the industry faces stricter environmental regulations.

HD Hyundai Marine Solution was responsible for the basic design, HD Hyundai Engineering & Technology lea the 3D modeling and detailed design, and DNV verified compliance with international regulations and classification standards.
