In Bulgaria, Renewables Now reported that Honeywell International and Brazilian industrial biotechnology firm GranBio Technologies joined forces to produce sustainable aviation fuel.
Under the partnership, Honeywell will combine its ethanol to jet (ETJ) technology with GranBio’s patented cellulosic ethanol AVAP technology to produce SAF from biomass residues at GranBio’s forthcoming demonstration plant in the US.
The report noted that the AVAP process converts biomass, including forest and agricultural residues, to low-carbon-intensity sugars, lignin and nanocellulose. The cellulosic sugars then can be converted to both SAF, through Honeywell’s ETJ technology, and biochemicals, through a separate process.
GranBio is working on a demonstration plant that will produce about 2 million of SAF per year using wood chips and sugar cane residue upon its commissioning which is expected in 2026, the report added.
