Honeywell partners with Jiutai to launch landmark methanol-to-SAF production facility

August 13, 2024 |

In China, ChemAnalyst reports Inner Mongolia Jiutai Group has chosen Honeywell’s UOP eFining technology to produce 100,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel annually from eMethanol. This deal represents Honeywell’s first global commercial license for its eFining technology, a methanol-to-jet process that efficiently converts eMethanol into low-carbon SAF. The technology utilizes methanol derived from carbon dioxide and green hydrogen, offering a potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by up to 88% compared to conventional jet fuel.

The partnership will see Jiutai transform its existing methanol-to-olefins facility into a SAF production plant, capitalizing on the abundant wind resources in northwest China. This collaboration not only optimizes Jiutai’s excess capacity but also aligns with global efforts to reduce the aviation industry’s carbon footprint.

William Yu, President of Honeywell China, highlighted the significance of this agreement, noting that it showcases Honeywell’s expertise in SAF and its dedication to flexible, sustainable feedstocks. Cui Lianguo, Chairman of Jiutai Group, emphasized the long-standing relationship between the two companies, which has now evolved to support energy transformation and sustainable aviation.
