In Spain, Aimplas is coordinating an effort to convert brewers spent grain leftover from beer production into bioplastics. Dubbed BioSupPack, the project’s goal is to develop sustainable alternatives for packaging for food, cosmetics, and other consumer goods, and also evaluate the feasibility of a recycling process. BSG makes up most of brewing waste and can be purchased for less than a euro per kilogram.
The project includes 17 private and public entities from 8 countries. According to Sustainable Plastics, BioSupPack is funded by an €8.8-million grant from the European Union’s Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking and the Horizon 2020 programmes.
