In Yemen, The Maritime Executive reports the Houthi movement claimed responsibility for recent long-range attacks including targeted vessel LPG carrier Essex, which the Houthis alleged to have attacked in the Mediterranean. Despite these claims, monitors such as the UK Maritime Trade Organization, EUNAVFOR Aspides, and the U.S. Central Command have not confirmed any such incidents.
The Essex, a 26,447 dwt vessel with a capacity of 35,000 cbm of gas, is anchored in Alexandria, Egypt. Managed by Zodiac Maritime, the Essex has been targeted by the Houthis due to the involvement of Israeli magnate Eyal Ofer. Zodiac Maritime has denied any unusual occurrences, and Ambrey reports the vessel has not recently left Egypt.
The Houthis’ threats follow a Bloomberg report citing a senior defense official, expressing concerns over the group’s advanced weaponry and potential reach to the Mediterranean. However, experts question the accuracy of these long-range attacks, noting frequent misses on closer targets.
EUNAVFOR Aspides has highlighted continued risks along key navigation routes near Yemen, emphasizing the persistent threat posed by the Houthi’s missile and UAV capabilities.
