HPCL commisions India’s first Solid Oxide based Electrolyser

June 12, 2024 |

In India, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. has successfully commissioned India’s first Solid Oxide based Electrolyser (SOE) at its HP Green R&D Centre, Bengaluru for Green Hydrogen (GH2) generation. This highly efficient pilot-scale electrolyzer can generate Green Hydrogen with 99.99% purity and marks a significant step in evaluating this technology for generation of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

The first of its kind SOE system produces Green Hydrogen from the electricity generated by a captive Solar+Wind plant using a 20 kW Solid Oxide Electrolyser stack. One of the unique features of the SOEC commissioned is that, it does not use rare earth materials for electrodes/electrolytes. Further the energy consumption is about 20-30% lower than the other electrolyzer technologies. Going forward, this has the potential to enable Green Hydrogen Mission economically sustainable.
