In Florida, The Maritime Executive reports South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai, in collaboration with American Bureau of Shipping, unveiled autonomous safety technology to enhance crew safety aboard ammonia-fueled vessels by reducing human presence in hazardous areas through remote propulsion control and automated monitoring systems.
The new “Unmanned Engine Room” concept addresses the inherent dangers of handling ammonia, a fuel gaining traction in decarbonisation efforts, by minimizing crew presence in the engine room. This technology, alongside an AI-driven Safety Package, aims to ensure safer operations and more efficient management of ammonia-powered ships.
Hyundai’s Executive Vice President, Jaejun Jung, highlighted their expertise in alternative fuel systems as crucial in developing this breakthrough, which improves both safety and operational efficiency. ABS, which granted approval in principle, noted that this collaboration is part of a broader effort to integrate autonomous technologies into ship navigation and safety systems. This advancement reflects the growing maritime industry demand for greener, safer shipping solutions amid increasing pressure for decarbonisation.
