#5 Long Island oyster farmers launch skincare brand

In New York, two oyster farmers are creating a new revenue stream for the popular shellfish in skincare. David Daly and Ben Gonzalez of Long Island’s Southold Bay Oyster Farm tell Newsday.com their face cream hydrates, moisturizes and softens skin.

“We wanted to be able to bring the benefits of oysters to everyone including folks who do not eat them,” says Gonzalez.

Daly, Gonzalez’s husband and business partner, was able to leverage his past experience at personal care giant L’Oreal to help develop the formulations. “My short career in the beauty industry has definitely helped shape our expansion into skin care,” Daly adds.

The Southold Bay Skin Care line uses oyster nacre to generate a moisturizing film. The cream retails for $29 at southoldbay.com.
