In India, Chini Mandi reports at the G20 Agriculture Ministerial Meeting held on September 12-13, 2024, in Cuiaba, Brazil, a significant agreement was reached between India and Brazil to collaborate on ethanol production technology. The discussions, led by India’s Minister of State for Agriculture, Ram Nath Thakur, and Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Favaro, focused on deepening ties in science, technology, and market access for agricultural goods.
India, which has seen its ethanol output surge from 1.73 billion litres in 2019 to over 5 billion litres by 2023, stands to benefit from Brazil’s advanced expertise in ethanol production. This collaboration is part of India’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio and strengthen its position as the world’s third-largest ethanol producer, following the United States and Brazil.
The bilateral talks also touched on trade issues, with India seeking access to the Brazilian market for key agricultural products such as sorghum, rapeseed, and cotton, while Brazil aims to export citrus and other goods to India. Both countries expressed optimism that a Memorandum of Understanding between ICAR and EMBRAPA will be finalized before the G20 leaders’ summit in November 2024.
