In India, researchers at the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding are looking at the Punnai tree, a native tree to the coastal and river areas in many parts of the southern region of the country, as a potential crop for biodiesel production thanks to the high oil content of its seeds. A five-year old tree that has been properly cared for can provide two harvests per year, averaging 2.1 liters of oil per harvest.
