#10 Overdelivering on mandates

As long-time Canadian analyst Don O’Connor reported at the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association annual summit last week in Vancouver, Canada is significantly overblending of renewables well past mandated levels. Roughly 215 million liters of ethanol are required under mandate, while about 285 billion liters have been blended.

The mandates are numerous and varied in Canada. Here’s a summary.

British Columbia

Has a Low Carbon Fuel Standard that requires a 10% reduction in fossil intensity by 2020. Plus, the province has a 5% mandate in place for gasoline, and 4% in diesel.

Alberta

5% alcohol

2% diesel

minimum 25% reduction in GHGs

Federal

4.76 percent of gasoline

1.96 percent of diesel

heating oil removed from consideration

There are no GHG requirements associated with mandates.

Saskatchewan

7.5% ethanol

2,0% renewable diesel

Manitoba

8.5% ethanol

2% renewable diesel

There are no GHG requirements associated with mandates.

Ontario

5% ethanol

2-4% renewables in diesel

A 30-70% GHG reduction requirement for qualifying renewables
