In Japan, Material Flow Plus reports seven leading Japanese companies have agreed to conduct a demonstration test to promote the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel at Narita Airport through an initiative to build a new scheme for trading “Scope 3 environmental value,” which refers to the indirect reduction of CO2 emissions from using SAF.
Participants include NIPPON EXPRESS Holdings, ITOCHU Corporation, ENEOS, Japan Airlines, Mizuho Bank, Mizuho Research & Technologies, and Narita International Airport Co. Ltd. This collaboration marks the world’s first attempt to activate Scope 3 environmental value trading among fuel suppliers, airlines, forwarders, and airport companies.
The project intends to facilitate the sharing of SAF costs throughout the air transportation value chain. Following this pilot, the scheme will be expanded to involve more companies, aiming to spread SAF usage across Japan and contribute to the sustainable growth of the aviation industry.
Each company has a specific role in the test: ITOCHU and ENEOS will supply SAF, JAL will provide Scope 3 environmental value, NIPPON EXPRESS will handle air cargo transportation, and Mizuho Bank and Mizuho Research will support the transaction system. Narita Airport will operate the platform and purchase Scope 3 environmental value for business trips.
