In Japan, NHK reported that Japanese rail operator West Japan Railway aims to use biofuels in all its diesel trains by 2030.
JR West intends to replace light diesel oil with biodiesel fuels made from plants or algae called euglena, according to the report.
The firm expects the move will help it to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 55,000 tons a year.
According to the report, JR West plans to start testing engines running on the fuels in the current fiscal year. The company also expects to start conducting trials with passengers on board in fiscal 2024, and start using the new biofuels in regular services in fiscal 2025.
