In Texas, KBR has been awarded a contract by Samsung Heavy Industries to conduct a conceptual study on a floating blue ammonia production facility. SHI, one of South Korea’s largest shipbuilders, is diversifying into ocean energy, and the study will focus on integrating KBR’s ammonia technology with SHI’s floating vessel designs.
The project leverages KBR’s experience in blue ammonia, a low-carbon alternative to traditional ammonia production, which captures and stores carbon emissions. This floating platform concept could provide more flexibility in meeting global energy transition goals, particularly for regions with limited land-based infrastructure.
“We are proud to collaborate with SHI for this strategic project and provide our low-carbon blue ammonia process technology solution to develop this first-of-its-kind floating ammonia production facility,” said Jay Ibrahim, KBR President, Sustainable Technology Solutions.
KBR has long been a leader in ammonia technology, having engineered or constructed over 260 ammonia plants worldwide since 1943. This new venture underscores the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation in the sector, as demand for cleaner energy solutions continues to rise.
