Knutsen NYK and COSCO launch LCO2 carrier initiative

August 22, 2024 |

In Norway, Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers announced a Joint Study Agreement with COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry to develop Liquefied Carbon Dioxide carriers, advancing the global push for carbon capture and storage solutions. The initiative leverages KNCC’s LCO2-Elevated Pressure technology, an innovative vessel design approved by DNV, the maritime certification authority, to facilitate direct offshore CO2 injection—a process expected to streamline and economize the CCUS value chain, particularly in the North Sea.

This partnership underscores a strategic pivot towards greener technologies in maritime operations, aiming to reduce the complexities and costs associated with traditional CCUS methods. By using vessels equipped for direct injection, KNCC and CHI are positioning themselves at the forefront of the industry’s transition towards more sustainable practices.

The collaboration between KNCC and CHI not only exemplifies the growing trend of maritime innovations aimed at environmental sustainability but also highlights the role of specialized vessels in the broader decarbonization of the shipping industry.
