In Washington D.C., U.S. Representatives Mike Flood (R-NE) and Troy A. Carter (D-LA) introduced the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Information Act on August 9, 2024. The proposed legislation mandates that the U.S. Energy Information Administration enhance its reporting on SAF by integrating these data into its regular weekly and monthly fuel reports.
Nebraska, a biofuel powerhouse and the nation’s second-largest producer, stands to benefit significantly from this initiative. Representative Flood emphasized the potential of SAF to bolster the bioeconomy and rural development. This move aligns with increasing demands for transparency in the burgeoning SAF industry, which is seen as a critical step towards sustainable transportation.
The act also comes as a strategic response to the aviation sector’s substantial carbon footprint, accounting for roughly 10% of U.S. transportation-related emissions. By providing detailed and accessible data on SAF production and usage, the bill aims to encourage investment and innovation in this nascent sector.
