#4 I’m Lovin’ It: Major McDonald’s franchisee taps UBQ for plastic alternative

In South America, the region’s largest McDonald’s franchisee has announced it will substitute plastic trays for more sustainable materials. Arcos Dorados Holdings has contracted Israel’s UBQ Materials to provide the new material, which is made from household wastes such as food leftovers, paper, cardboard, and mixed plastics.

Initially, over 7,000 trays will be introduced in 30 McDonald’s restaurants in Brazil. Eventually, the new trays will be available throughout Arcos’ franchises. To meet the second phase of rollout, UBQ has an order to produce material for an additional 11,000 trays. Plastic trays currently being used at the McDonald’s locations in question will be used in other circular economy projects under Arcos.
