Maersk chooses mix of methanol and liquified gas dual-fuel propulsion systems

August 8, 2024 |

In Denmark, Maersk announced their fleet renewal program continuation with the signing of newbuilding orders and time-charter contracts for 50-60 dual-fuel vessels capable of running on methanol or liquified bio-methane, totaling 800,000 TEU. The exact allocation of propulsion technologies will be determined based on future regulatory requirements and the availability of green fuels.

This approach is in line with Maersk’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Chief Operating Officer Rabab Boulos emphasized that green methanol is likely to become the most competitive and scalable pathway to decarbonization in the short term. However, Maersk also foresees a multifuel future, necessitating the inclusion of LNG to ensure flexibility and resilience in their fuel strategy.

Maersk has begun securing offtake agreements for liquified bio-methane to ensure that the new dual-fuel gas vessels achieve greenhouse gas emissions reductions within this decade.

Approximately 25% of Maersk’s fleet will be equipped with dual-fuel engines, supporting the company’s goal to reach net zero emissions by 2040. Ahmed Hassan, Head of Asset Strategy & Strategic Partnerships, highlighted the importance of diversifying fuel options to adapt to future energy sources and regulatory changes.
