Maersk expands green fleet with methanol-powered Alexandra Maersk

October 10, 2024 |

In the UK at the Port of Felixstowe, Maersk launched the Alexandra Maersk, a dual-fuel methanol vessel, the fifth ship in a series of 18 dual-fuel methanol 16,000 TEU containerships scheduled for delivery in 2024 and 2025.

The naming ceremony featured UK Maritime Minister Mike Kane who said, “This is exactly the kind of innovation we need to deliver a greener, cleaner maritime sector which is better for people and for our planet.” Fashion retailer Primark, a key customer, was represented by Director Elaine Condon as the ship’s godmother, highlighting their joint commitment to decarbonizing supply chains through Maersk’s ECO Delivery Ocean product.

Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc emphasized the importance of collective action and called on the International Maritime Organization to close the price gap between green and fossil fuels. The Alexandra Maersk represents a major step in Maersk’s decarbonization strategy, aligning with their goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. This effort is central to both Maersk’s and Primark’s commitment to driving the green transition in global shipping, further bolstering sustainability in logistics.
