In India, the Economic Times of India reports that Maharashtra has decided to ban molasses exports during the 2023/24 sugarcane season that kicked off on October 1 to ensure sufficient supplies for ethanol and alcohol in light of a 15% lower expected crop this year. Although the official sugar year began on October 1, the crush in the state won’t begin until November 1. There is also discussion regarding limiting traditional sugar production due to its growing competition with sugarcane mills for limited cane resources.
