In Malawi, the government still hasn’t approved or put forward a proposal of its own for ethanol pricing that would allow higher blends to be sold at the pump. The domestic ethanol industry proposed a year ago to peg ethanol at 86% of the current gasoline price. Pump infrastructure is ready for the high level blends while cars would need to be fitted with an ethanol conversion kit in order to run on E85 or E100. When asked about the delay, the Finance Minister pushed the answer to the national energy regulator who pushed it back to the finance ministry as the competent authority.
