In Virginia, Packaging Dive reports Mars Inc., renowned for its candy bars and other food products, has announced it is unlikely to meet its 2025 sustainable packaging targets. The company cited delays in design and infrastructure changes necessary for packaging circularity as primary reasons.
Mars, which has been aligning its goals with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global commitment, reported in its 2023 sustainability report that while progress is being made, the pace is slower than anticipated. “The design and infrastructure changes needed are taking longer than we anticipated,” Mars stated, indicating it is unlikely to fully meet the targets by the end of 2025.
In 2023, 61% of Mars’ consumer-facing packaging was designed to be recyclable, compostable, or reusable, an increase from 57% in 2022. However, only 1.5% of the packaging portfolio contained recycled content.
Allison Lin, Mars’ Global VP of Packaging Sustainability, mentioned the company is working on redesigning over 12,000 packaging units and eliminating unnecessary packaging. Efforts include switching to mono-materials and exploring reusable options.
