In Colorado, The Fence Post reports U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, speaking to National Farmers Union members this week, warned that critical support for mid-size farmers, including programs funded through the Commodity Credit Corporation and the Inflation Reduction Act, could be at risk if efforts to reduce government spending succeed.
Vilsack highlighted the importance of the CCC, with its $30 billion annual spending authority, in backing initiatives such as the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities and promoting biofuels like plant-based sustainable aviation fuel, which could offer new revenue streams for farmers. While commercial farmers dominate food production, Vilsack emphasized that mid-size farmers are the backbone of rural communities, supporting local economies and contributing to military service.
Vilsack urged NFU members to defend the CCC, stressing that its flexible funding is essential for addressing the unique challenges faced by mid-size farmers. Without these programs, he warned, the future of both these farms and sustainable agricultural advancements could be uncertain.
