MIT study highlights Colombia’s potential to produce SAF

July 9, 2024 |

In Colombia, El Tiempo reported that Colombia has a great opportunity in SAF production, according to the preliminary results of a study presented last week in Bogotá by researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). According to the report, which will be published in full in August and whose development was supported by Latam Airlines and Airbus, Colombia has the capacity to be a center for SAF production and export, but government incentives are still lacking to achieve this goal, given that production is still very expensive and therefore not yet economically viable. “Government policy mechanisms will be needed to create the conditions that allow SAF to be commercially viable in the region, while balancing the impact of decarbonisation measures on passenger traffic and connectivity. To achieve net zero, SAF deployment must be complemented by other activities: aircraft manufacturers must accelerate the development of incremental and disruptive technologies, fuel efficiency and research and development of alternative propulsion options (hydrogen, electric and hybrid aircraft),” the report stated.
