In Tennessee, Northeast Wood Products owned by the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut wants to produce wood pellets from waste wood in the region at the mothballed Tennol Energy plant in Jasper. The re-fit from ethanol plant to 125,000 ton per year pellet plant should be completed by November. The pellets will likely be shipped overseas, putting the facility’s location on the Tennessee River with easy rail access in the perfect position to get product to port. Some local environmentalists fear the project isn’t sustainable, claiming there is no waste wood available.
