Navigator Gas CEO urges carbon levy to speed shipping’s green transition

September 4, 2024 |

In the UK, Rivera Maritime Media reports at the ABS Sustainability Summit in Hamburg, Germany, Navigator Gas CEO Mads Peter Zacho made a bold call for the shipping industry to accelerate its transition to low- and zero-carbon fuels, emphasizing the need for a carbon levy on bunker fuel. Zacho’s keynote address highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change, stating, “It’s not slowing down; it’s accelerating,” and urged shipping to keep pace.

“I hope for an ambitious global carbon price levied on shipping, which is something unexpected from an owner – but the cost will move down the supply chain as it should. The impact to the consumer for green shipping is only expected to be 1% to 2% more,” Zacho said.

Navigator Gas, a leading owner of handysize liquefied gas carriers, is positioning itself at the forefront of this energy shift. The company recently invested in two ethane dual-fuel gas carriers from China, scheduled for delivery in 2027. These vessels, designed to transport complex petrochemical gases like ethylene and clean ammonia, will be equipped with carbon capture technology and prepared for future ammonia operation.
