In Denmark, NORDEN announced an agreement with global resources company BHP to use approximately 1,000 tonnes of 100% biofuel for a voyage from Hay Point, Australia, to Rotterdam, Netherlands, aboard the Capesize vessel NORD Steel. This marks the largest quantity of biofuel ever used on a single NORDEN voyage and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 2,500 tonnes compared to traditional maritime fuel.
BHP’s Head of Maritime, Sarah Greenough said, “We are delighted to work with like-minded partners like NORDEN to consume biofuel as a contribution towards decarbonising supply chain emissions.”
Jan Rindbo, CEO of NORDEN, highlighted the significance of biofuels in the company’s decarbonization strategy, noting that biofuels can be used on NORDEN’s fleet of over 500 vessels without engine modifications, delivering immediate emission reductions.
NORDEN has been a leader in biofuel use since 2018, when it conducted the first commercial shipment using B100. The company continues to push forward with investments in biofuel technologies and initiatives to help decarbonize the shipping industry.
