Norwegian firm Fuella secures key spot at Porto do Açu hydrogen hub in Brazil

August 14, 2024 |

In The Netherlands, Offshore Energy reports Norwegian green hydrogen developer Fuella has secured a 1 million square meter site at Porto do Açu in Brazil to establish a facility capable of producing 400,000 tons of green ammonia annually. This marks Fuella’s first foray into Brazil, as part of a landmark agreement with Porto do Açu, a subsidiary of Prumo Logística. The newly licensed low-carbon hydrogen hub, approved by the Rio de Janeiro Government in January 2024, aims to integrate renewable hydrogen production with ammonia and methanol units for both export and domestic markets.

Fuella’s project includes a 520 MW green ammonia plant based on water electrolysis, with a final investment decision anticipated within four years and production expected by 2030. Thorsten Helms, Fuella’s Managing Director of Business & Corporate Development, highlighted Porto do Açu’s infrastructure and support as key factors in the decision, underscoring the strategic importance of this partnership for Fuella’s global expansion. The company’s portfolio also includes the Skipavika Green Ammonia project in Norway, one of Europe’s first emission-free production facilities.
