Patagonia’s guide book world’s first use of algae offset ink

In Colorado, Cast Iron Design collaborated with Living Ink to print 8,000 copies of Patagonia’s Boulder Guide Book using a black pigment ink made with algae. The algae ink is made using a thermal procedure to convert the algae into a dark pigment, then is combined with vegetable oil and other additives to create the ink.

The brown pocket book was printed using offset printing and the paper is 100% post-consumer waste recycled and chlorine-free which hones in on Patagonia’s eco-friendly business philosophy.

Cast Iron Design told Yanko Design that though this may look like “a seemingly inconsequential achievement on its own, small victories like this push the industry towards a more sustainable future.”
