In Malaysia, Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), Enilive S.p.A (a subsidiary of Eni S.p.A.), and Euglena Co., Ltd. have finalized their investment decision to develop a biorefinery at PETRONAS’ Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) in Johor, Malaysia. The joint venture, with PETRONAS Mobility Lestari Sdn Bhd (PMLSB) and Enilive as primary shareholders, aims to begin operations by the second half of 2028.
The biorefinery will produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and other biofuels like Renewable Diesel/Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) to meet the increasing demands of global aviation and transportation sectors. Construction is set to commence in Q4 of this year, and the facility will process approximately 650,000 tonnes of raw materials annually, including used vegetable oils, animal fats, and other biomass sources.
Strategically positioned to leverage PETRONAS’ integrated facilities, the biorefinery will benefit from proximity to feedstock supply and access to international shipping routes. The facility will feature advanced Ecofining™ technology, developed by Eni and Honeywell UOP, allowing flexibility in processing various feedstocks and maximizing SAF production.
