In the Netherlands, Offshore Energy reports Lloyd’s Register has awarded its first class notation for an onboard carbon capture system to the tanker Pacific Cobalt, operated by Eastern Pacific Shipping. This move marks a significant milestone in maritime environmental efforts, showcasing advanced carbon capture technology aboard a 50,000 dwt mid-range chemical carrier.
Developed by Dutch firm Value Maritime, the Filtree Onboard Carbon Capture & Storage system is designed to reduce the vessel’s carbon dioxide emissions by up to 40%. The system captures CO2 from ship exhaust, using a chemical process involving amine, a substance that binds with CO2 to facilitate its capture. This innovative technology aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s targets for emission reductions, highlighting a viable pathway for cleaner maritime operations.
The classification by LR not only underscores the system’s reliability and safety but also boosts industry confidence in OCCS technologies. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by EPS to enhance sustainability across its fleet, emphasizing the shipping industry’s role in global decarbonization efforts.
