In California, The Port of Hueneme announced a collaboration with STAX Engineering to deploy an innovative emissions capture and control system featuring mobile floating barges that attach filters to vessel stacks, capturing harmful emissions like particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen directly at the source. In 2017, the Port of Hueneme became the first Port in California to become Green Marine certified and was voted the Greenest Port in the U.S. at the Green Shipping Summit.
The cutting-edge technology, developed by STAX Engineering, represents a significant advancement in tackling air pollution from ships while at berth. Unlike traditional shore power solutions, the STAX barge system does not require expensive vessel modifications and is powered by renewable diesel.
STAX Engineering CEO, Mike Walker, noted the technology’s ability to operate independently of the local grid, addressing challenges like storm impacts and vessel incompatibility. This partnership aims to provide a cost-effective, environmentally friendly solution for at-berth emission regulations, reinforcing the Port of Hueneme’s role as a leader in sustainable maritime operations.
