#4 Ap-peeling idea: Banana waste leather wins accolades

In Berlin, designer Youyang Song has developed a 100% biodegradable leather alternative from banana peels and algae. Dubbed PEELSPHERE, the material was formulated to replace both animal and synthetic leathers made from petroleum. The new material is waterproof and pliable, and can be soft or hard, depending on end product needs.

“I’m passionate about biomaterial research and sustainable development,” Song tells designboom. “My purpose [here] is to inspire and contribute to a better planet with new eco-friendly materials and sustainable strategies.”

The material has won design awards, including the All Innovate award from oxford foundry and the K-generation award from Kering Group.
