Punjab turns stubble into biofuel with new green fuel initiative

September 18, 2024 |

In India, Janta Se Rishta reports the Punjab government is advancing its green fuel initiative by setting up pelletization plants to convert paddy stubble into biofuel, aiming to address the environmental challenge of stubble burning. As of mid-September 2024, 16 such plants are operational across the state, with 21 more expected by November. This initiative, part of the Punjab Pollution Control Board’s ex-situ management strategy, focuses on transporting stubble for use in industrial boilers and power plants, reducing pollution during the paddy harvesting season.

The board estimates that 700,000 metric tonnes of stubble will be used for pellet production this year, offering farmers a new source of income through stubble collection and supply. This approach is also designed to help industries transition to biofuels, with 36 new facilities being outfitted with boilers capable of burning these pellets. By repurposing agricultural waste, the initiative is driving economic opportunities while mitigating the harmful effects of stubble burning.
