In Finland, GENA’s Project Navigator Methanol reports significant growth among 176 active renewable and low carbon methanol plants and projects including 97 e-methanol projects with a total capacity of 15.8 Mt, 67 biomethanol projects totaling 10.3 Mt, and 12 low-carbon methanol projects with an 8.1 Mt capacity.
The primary growth in biomethanol capacities is anticipated from biomass and waste gasification projects. Biomass gasification projects have achieved a total capacity of 7 million tons (Mt), while waste gasification projects have reached 2 Mt. Additionally, biomethane reforming contributes another 1.25 Mt to the biomethanol pipeline. Among these, biomass gasification is the fastest-growing segment within the biomethanol projects.
China, the frontrunner in this sector, has added six new projects, boosting its renewable methanol capacity considerably. Europe is also making strides, showing notable increases. North America’s progress is steady, while Australia and other regions contribute their share to the global renewable energy efforts.
However, many projects face delays, averaging around 14 months, indicating the complexities of new technologies and infrastructure. Despite these setbacks, the sector’s growth is evident, with the project pipeline expanding by 1.6 million tons monthly since February 2024.
