This week, Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle, is giving the first wave of injections of an investigational vaccine for the 2019 novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, to volunteers participating in phase one of the federally sponsored clinical trial. This is the first vaccine trial for this virus, which causes COVID-19, in humans. The KPWHRI trial began recruiting participants on March 3. A minor historical note of interest, the site of the trials is a few blocks north of the old Seattle Ice Arena where the Stanley Cup finals were being played in 1919 when the famed ice hockey championshiop was cancelled in the midst of the 1918-1919 Spanish flue pandemic.
