Ricardo Expands Maritime Reach with Advanced Hydrogen Propulsion Testing

May 14, 2024 |

In the UK, a press release from engineering and environmental consultancy Ricardo reported a significant expansion of its propulsion system development capabilities, particularly in multi-stack fuel cell technology. This strategic enhancement follows the January 2021 inauguration of a £2.5 million hydrogen testing facility at its UK headquarters in Shoreham-by-Sea, marking a doubling of its hydrogen testing capacity.

The consultancy has repurposed an existing building at its site for testing large-scale marine engines, amplifying its support for the maritime sector. This move leverages Ricardo’s extensive experience in hydrogen technology, positioning it as a leader in the field.

According to the release, Jason Oms O’Donnell, Managing Director of Automotive and Industrial at Ricardo, emphasized the role of hydrogen in decarbonization across various industries: “Hydrogen offers a real alternative to supporting decarbonisation… Our expertise in design, development, and test of innovative new propulsion systems means that we’re at the forefront of innovation in this area.”

Ricardo’s commitment extends to its pivotal role in the Sustainable Hydrogen Powered Shipping (sHYpS) project, aiming to implement cutting-edge hydrogen technologies to assist the maritime sector in achieving long-term decarbonization goals. This expansion enhances Ricardo’s capability to deliver future-oriented projects in green technology.
