In Canada, Calgary Herald reported that the Southern Alberta Energy from Waste Association has proposed a facility that would annually process up to 300,000 tons of municipal solid waste from the non-profit’s membership of southern and central Alberta municipalities and waste management jurisdictions, as well as other waste generators across southern Alberta.
The association estimates diverting that much waste from landfill sites would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by seven million tons over the 30-year life span of the plant, the equivalent of taking 53,000 vehicles off the road. The organization said almost 500 people will be employed during construction of the plant over three years and running the plant will generate close to 60 direct, permanent jobs.
The report stated that the group is currently in talks with global greentech company Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI) to develop an initial memorandum of understanding for the facility at the Newell Regional Landfill near Brooks, about 160 kilometers southeast of Calgary.
