Spain could become future European renewable gas hub

In Spain, the opportunity for Spain to become a future European gas hub through the development of renewable gases, such as biomethane and green hydrogen, is becoming increasingly evident. Specifically, biomethane is emerging as one of the great keys, not only for the transformation of the energy mix in the short term, but also to advance towards the decarbonization of the economy.

In this sense, Spain has the potential to produce biomethane – a source of

renewable and indigenous energy – of 163 TWh/year, a figure that would cover around 45% of the national demand for natural gas and whose development could have led to savings of about 4 billion euros to consumers on their energy bill in 2022, due to the reduction of purchases from third countries
