In Singapore, Splash 247 reports Danish towage company Svitzer placed an order with Uzmar shipyard in Turkey for the world’s first tugboat powered by a combination of a 6MWh battery and dual-fuel methanol engines. Scheduled to perform a significant portion of its duties at Sweden’s port of Gothenburg, this 34.9-meter vessel is designed to operate using its battery-electric powertrain for over 90% of its activities, enhancing efficiency and sustainability in marine logistics.
This pioneering tug, crafted in collaboration with naval architect Robert Allan, is engineered to deliver a bollard pull of 85 tonnes and can handle escort steering and braking forces of 150 and 200 tonnes respectively at 10 knots. The design supports Gothenburg’s ambition to become the world’s most sustainable port by integrating advanced energy solutions, including substantial infrastructure for methanol fueling and shore power facilities. Kasper Nilaus, CEO of Svitzer, highlighted the vessel as a versatile tool in the company’s strategy to significantly reduce emissions across their extensive network of global ports and terminals.
