Then: I was VP of NE Refining for Sunoco, living near Philadelphia. Crude prices were at record high, but product demand was high as well and margins were “healthy”. The largest portion of our capital program was driven by regulatory requirements with little remaining for efficiency.
Now: Retired and living near Houston. After 40 years in the energy business, I follow the markets and developing technology. Biofuels Digest helps by providing summaries as companies continue to drive bio-tech, and launch new processes into the competitive market.
Inspirations: Although I recognize many efforts will fail (poor yields, poor scale, etc.), it is important for the world that continuing research is supported. There is a pony somewhere in the pile. Forgetting the investment opportunity, we owe our best to future generations because access to affordable, responsible energy changes lives for the better. Biggest challenge is “getting the science right”.
Challenges: There has been too many instances of hype attracting investment and not delivering. The industry needs to better self-police and call out companies touting perpetual motion machines, or selling investments that can never survive the competitive market place.
