In Brussels, Transport & Environment (T&E) reports two-thirds of European green shipping fuel projects are at risk. Of 61 European hydrogen projects T&E mapped, at least 17, if operational, could meet nearly 4% of EU shipping’s energy demand by 2030, exceeding a 2034 2% green fuels target. However, 44 other projects may shift focus to other hydrogen-hungry industries due to financial uncertainties.
E-ammonia, making up 77% of potential volumes, is the preferred option, but none of these projects has received a final investment decision.
Spain could supply a third of green fuels for shipping. Despite extensive coastlines, the UK has few projects, and T&E found none in Italy or Greece.
Inesa Ulichina, shipping officer at T&E, said “Shipping has a chicken and egg problem. E-fuels producers are waiting for clearer demand signals from ship operators before making large investments. Shipping operators, on the other hand, are waiting for these fuels to scale up and become cheaper before signing off-take agreements.”
