In Washington D.C., the U.S. Department of Energy in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and the Federal Aviation Administration, has announced $12 million in new funding to advance biorefinery technologies and released a progress report on sustainable aviation fuel production. The report, unveiled on September 11, 2024, at the North American SAF Conference, highlights the rapid growth of SAF in the U.S., with production increasing tenfold since the SAF Grand Challenge was launched in 2021.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said, “By powering aviation through low-carbon fuels, farmers can earn extra income, tap into value-added climate smart-agriculture markets, and meet the demand for an aviation industry that seeks to accelerate sustainable production.”
The SAF Grand Challenge targets the production of 3 billion gallons of SAF annually by 2030, crucial for reducing aviation’s carbon emissions, which account for 11% of U.S. transportation-based CO2. SAF, produced from renewable biomass and waste resources, offers significant emission reductions compared to conventional jet fuel.
