In Washington D.C., The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports in the first five months of 2024, the United States experienced a notable increase in renewable diesel imports, averaging 30,000 barrels per day, nearing the record set in May 2023. This surge is primarily concentrated on the West Coast, which accounts for 94% of the country’s consumption of RD.
The spike in imports can be attributed to expanded production capabilities at Neste’s Singapore facility and increased storage capacity at Vopak’s terminal in Los Angeles. All U.S. imports came from Neste’s plants in Singapore and Rotterdam.
California, Oregon, and Washington—states with robust clean fuel programs—remain the largest markets for renewable diesel due to state-level incentives that complement federal policies. Notably, Los Angeles received 18,000 barrels per day of the imports, a significant increase from the previous year.
This uptick in renewable diesel imports reflects growing U.S. commitment to reducing carbon emissions and fostering cleaner fuel alternatives. However, anticipated maintenance at Neste’s plants later this year might temper this growth in the latter half of 2024.
