In the UK, the Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS) currently closes to new applications on November 30, 2025. The government is aware of various issues that are affecting the deployment of new anaerobic digestion plants under the scheme, including supply chain delays and challenges in securing food waste feedstocks.
In the government’s GGSS: Mid-Scheme Review consultation, it proposed extending the scheme to March 31, 2026 to address some of these challenges. Following engagement with industry as part of this consultation, it is clear that the proposed extension length would be insufficient to mitigate most of the issues affecting deployment.
Ahead of the full government response being published, it is announcing that the scheme will be extended to March 31, 2028 as part of the Mid-Scheme Review. It is expected that this will provide sufficient time for prospective applicants to apply for and commission on the scheme before it closes.
Full details of the extension, alongside other final policy decisions, will be published in the Mid-Scheme Review government response in due course. Regulations will then be laid in Parliament to implement any scheme amendments, including this extension. The extension will not come into effect until the regulations have been passed and become law. Therefore, in the meantime, scheme duration will remain as is and scheme applicants should continue to set their commissioning dates in line with current scheme deadlines until regulations come into effect.
The government is also considering options for a future policy framework for biomethane to follow the closure of the GGSS and intend to publish more details in 2024.
